Last month my friend Scottie, a private chef and cooking instructor, asked me to come along to help her cook a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for 12 strangers. Well why not?! I jumped at the opportunity to help! But who were these strangers?
The meal was organized through a website called VizEat and we had the great opportunity to show off our culinary skills chez the COO and Co-founder, Camille. Both Camille and her co-founder, Jean-Michel, have a passion for food and travel and thought of the concept to bring people together who share the same passions. Around a dining room table new friends can explore new cultures and new taste sensations. So how does it work? You simply join the VizEat website, make a profile and create a meal. Then guests sign up to visit your house and eat! What a great concept!
For most of the guests that fine Sunday afternoon, it was Thanksgiving dinner. Sunday morning, we got the turkey in the oven and headed down to the Passy market for some fresh ingredients. So, what was on the menu anyway? Well, Scottie is from North Carolina so she wanted her southern roots to shine. We began with shrimp and grits as the amuse bouche. The turkey was sided with sausage and sage dressing, asparagus soufflé, whipped sweet potatoes and green beans. And a sweet finish of upside down apple pie and pumpkin cheesecake truffles.
All of the guests gathered around the kitchen, ooh-ing and aah-ing over the turkey in the oven but we quickly had them take their seats around the table so we could cheers, give thanks and dig in. Everyone really enjoyed the meal! In no time at all, conversation was flowing, glasses were clinking and the plates were emptying and being filled with seconds.
What a great ambience around that table. The guests were from Paris, Italy, North America and beyond. It is so great that food can bring strangers together making them feel like old friends!
